The British Red Cross's annual search for Britain's real life young superheroes has begun. Nominations have opened for the 2010 Humanitarian Citizen Awards, which celebrates the valuable contributions young people make to the lives of others, so if you know anyone that deserves this recognition then let the British Red Cross know by 23rd July.

The awards recognise both individuals and groups aged under 25 who've done something extraordinary to help others. There are four categories; volunteering, first aid, fundraising and community action.

Robin Wells, British Red Cross youth co-ordinator, said "These awards recognise the amazing things that young people do to help others. They may not wear masks or a cape but their selfless actions have a real impact and help to make the world a better place. In a time when there are often negative images of young people, we want to celebrate their ingenuity and generosity. The Red Cross Humanitarian Citizen Awards are a chance to reward these young people and give them the recognition they deserve."

Last years winners include Vicki George who set up a charity called Post Pals to send cards, gifts and letters to seriously ill children, and Beat Ambassadors, a group from Norwich who helpyoung people with eating disorders.
