Lambing Live
On Sunday March 7th, BBC TWO will be showing Lambing Live, the first of 5 shows following the excitement and drama of the lambing season, the biggest event in the farming calendar. Presenter Kate Humble will be at a 900-ewe sheep farm in South Wales to help deliver new born lambs and to learn all about the processes involved in sheep farming.
There are over 1 billion sheep worldwide. The greatest numbers are farmed in Asia and Africa and are kept for meat, lamb and mutton, and for milk. Lambs are very independent at birth and form strong bonds with their mothers, recognising each other by their bleats. Older sheep are surprisingly intelligent, able to recognise and remember up to 50 sheep faces and those of familiar humans.
Fortunately, most farmed sheep are kept outdoors in extensive systems, with less than 1% kept in intensive systems. However, CIWF campaigns tirelessely to improve welfare standards and they are constantly striving to attract new donors to their charity.
