The Blue Cross was founded as Our Dumb Friends League in 1897 as an animal welfare charity. Their aims are to ensure the welfare of animals by providing practical care, highlight the benefits of companionship between animals and people and promote a sense of respect and responsibility towards animals in the community.

Over 6,000 unwanted, stray and abandoned animals are taken in by the Blue Cross each year. The Blue Cross is working harder than ever before to find and rescue stray and unwanted pets that would otherwise be put down.

Last year the Blue Cross saw a sharp increase in the number of pets being brought to their centres because their owners could no longer afford to look after them. They expect more pets to lose their homes for this reason in 2009.

Please support the Blue Cross and help protect the valuable work that they do by taking the time to register today!

How your donations to the Blue Cross Charity will be used?

Blue Cross Charity

The Blue Cross Charity uses its funds to provide support to the nation's pets and their owners in the following ways:

  • Treating pets whose owners cannot afford private veterinary treatment
  • Finding permanent homes for unwanted or abandoned animals
  • Educating the public in responsible animal ownership

The Blue Cross Charity receives no government funding and are totally reliant on donations and fundraising events for their income. 80% of all donations to The Blue Cross Charity goes directly towards helping animals in need. Last year it cost more than £17.7 million to provide theirr services - for example, it costs:

  • £15 to provide vaccinations that will protect a puppy against life threatening illness
  • £18.83 a week to keep a dog's kennel warm
  • £79.65 to provide the veterinary care needed by a cat
  • £90 to pay for a course of vaccinations to protect a horse or pony's health
  • £204.75 to care for a dog during its stay in one of our adoption centres
  • £500 to provide hay and bedding for a horse for winter

Set up a direct debit today and help the Blue Cross Charity plan more effectively for the future care of their animals in the knowledge that your direct debit donation is on its way every month.
