Action Medical Research are a leading independent medical research charity dedicated to improving the health of babies and children.

Action Medical Research have been making medical breakthroughs for almost 60 years, supporting research that includes the UK polio vaccine, ultrasound scanning in pregnancy and the hip replacement operation. Action Medical Research are looking for answers to a wide range of diseases and conditions that affect young and old alike including crohns disease, epilepsy, premature birth and many more.

Action Medical Research have a full portfolio of exciting events and have built an enviable reputation in cycling events. Their flagship ride is London to Paris which caters for 600 riders and takes place over 4 routes. It finishes in Paris in time to watch the final of the Tour De France. They also have a great selection of regional rides including the famous Action100 Bristol or Bath to London. Action Medical Research also offer treks in the UK and abroad, team events, marathons and many other exciting experiences.

The Great North Run, the Great Wall Trek and Sail the Solent are just a couple of examples of the once in a lifetime events that you can participate in to raise funds for Action Medical Research.

Action Medical Research is currently campaigning hard for the STAND UP for Tiny Lives Campaign but they've a long string of successes and milestones, some of which are detailed below:

• Life-saving fetal heart monitor
• Helping to assess and relive pain in severely disable children
• Flexible and adaptable seating system to help support disabled people
• Improving survival from childhood liver disease
• Polio, meningitis and rubella vaccines
• Ultrasound scanning in pregnancy
• Developments in bronchiolitis, crohns disease, sickle cell disease and ulcerative colitis
• Developments in spina bifida and folic acid

The STAND UP for Tiny Lives Campaign pulls together supporters, parents of premature babies, researchers, clinicians and nurses, as well as professional organizations and other charities in developing medical research around understanding premature birth in order to reduce the rates of premature birth and improve infant health.

Each year in the UK around 50,000 babies are born too early. Every week more than 25 babies die as a result of complications arising from premature birth. Premature birth is the single biggest cause of death among infants under one year old in the UK. Many babies born early often face difficulties with breathing, feeding and fighting infection. Some babies who survive an early delivery can face life-long debilitating conditions such as cerebral palsy or developmental problems.
